Tests on Cogenerators as per GAD and BED Directives

Cogeneration is the process for the combined production, in the very same plant, of mechanical energy (generally transformed into electricity) and heath that can be used for buildings heating and/or for processes related to the industry and production.

With the new GAS laboratory and the ministerial approval, TÜV Rheinland Italy is carrying out tests on Cogenerators produced by TOTEM ENERGY, to check the conformity as per EN 50465:2015 “European product standard for combined heating power systems using gas fuel” standard, which absorb the GAD (2009/142/EC – Gas Appliances Directive) and BED (92/42/EEC – directive for efficiency) directives.

Regulatory framework

The main tests required by the standard, include tests for the thermal capacity, combustion, temperature limits and measuring of the efficiency: to perform these tests, the cogenerator has been fueled with different kinds of gases, to simulate the change of properties of the gas itself, in the various European countries.

To complete the standardization framework that regulates the introduction of the Cogenerators in the European Market, in TÜV Rheinland Italia’s laboratories, the constructional requisites have been verified and tests on Totem Energy’s cogenerators have been carried out, to certify the conformity with the following Directives: EMC – Electromagnetic Compatibility (in accordance IEC 6100-6-2 and IEC 6100-6-3 standards) , RED – Radio Equipment (in accordance with ETSI EN 301 511 and EtSi EN 300 328 standards), Machineries Directive (in accordance with EN 12601, EN 60204-1 and EN 13849 standards), other than the check of the conformity to the Standards for network connection for the following countries: Italy ( CEI 0-16 and CEI 0-21), Germany ( VDE 4105), United Kingdom (G 59).

Other than the CE Mark as per GAD and BED Directives, TÜV Rheinland Italy, with its accreditations ad laboratories, offers to the manufacturers of cogeneration devices, the following certifications:

  • EMC Directive (2014/30/EC).
  • RED Directive (2014/53/EC): for the devices that install WiFi, ZigBee etc communication modules.
  • Machineries Directive (2006/42/EC).
  • Efficiency Measurement (DIN 4709).
  • Test of the conformity to the grid connection standard for European (Italy, Germany, UK, etc) and worldwide (USA, Canada, China, etc.) markets.
