LEED® certification – Platinum Level Cascina Triulza, the Civil Society Pavilion in Expo 2015

Expo 2015 is now finished but its records are not known at all. Among these we find that for the renovation of Cascina Triulza, the Hall of the Civil Society, has been provided by the USGBC (US Green Building Council) LEED certification – Platinum Level.

LEED® rating system that is the most widespread in the world of sustainable.

The certification comes at the end of a path that was established by the sustainability goals of EXPO Milano 2015, whose organizers have pledged to adopt a series of measures aimed at the planning and sustainable management of the site. Among these measures were also the reference to international standards, such as the protocols for the Green Building – Sustainable Building.

In 2011-12, from the earliest stages of design, Cascina Triulza has been identified as a particularly representative of the Site, as traditional rural construction Lombard end of ‘800, originally dedicated to supporting life and the activities of farmers, in line with the theme of Expo Milano 2015 “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”.

Just as part of the historical, architectural and environmental resources of the farm buildings in Milan, as well as architectural complex that would remain after the Expo, Expo 2015 SpA, the company responsible for the organization of the event, has paid particular attention to restructuring and expansion of Cascina Triulza, choosing as a reference family of LEED® rating system and more specifically the Italian Protocol LEED® NC Italy 2009 (Applicable to New Construction and Major Renovations).

An important milestone for the development of high performance sustainability pursued. In mid-October, at the end of this path, Cascina Triulza EXPO is the only building of LEED® certified.

Initiated with the objective of reaching the starting points for the level “Silver”, the path ended with the prestigious level “Platinum” confirming the continuous optimization process conducted by Cascina Triulza that clearly married and embraced the principles at the base of LEED®.

The route went through LEED® the entire life cycle of the work, from the design phase to the construction phase of the pipeline. The certification process (from the Design Review Construction Review) was constantly monitored and conducted by Greenwich Srl for services LEED AP (Accredited Professional) and by Bureau Veritas Italy for services of Commissioning (basic and advanced), as support and warranty for commissioning.

Within EXPO Milano 2015, the Pavilion of Civil Society – Cascina Triulza is distinguished by elements of sustainability of the work: from design choices, civil and plant engineering to construction materials, from energy efficiency to water management and to ‘use of renewable energy, from waste disposal to indoor air quality to the management of cleaning services. Even aspects of mobility and accessibility have not been overlooked.

Cascina Triulza is also an important symbol because it shows that the recovery of old rural traditions and food, typical of Lombardy and Italy, can be conjugated with the latest dictates of international sustainable construction. Is, in the food chain, the opportunity to combine “content” and “container” based on sustainability.
